Friends of WRC

Through membership in Friends of WRC, community members enhance the ability of Women’s Resource Center to continue to provide quality services to children who are the silent victims of domestic violence. The Friends continues to grow with over 130 active members and a very involved steering committee.

The mission of Friends is to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals and families affected by domestic violence and sexual assault by providing both financial and committed volunteer support for WRC activities and events.

How Do Friends Help?

As an additional way of increasing community involvement, the membership based Friends of WRC was established in 2004. A major emphasis of the Friends is to attract additional people in the community who have the energy, time and talents that can assist the Women's Resource Center.

Membership dues and monies from special events provide special activities for the children in residence at WRC's battered women's shelter and transitional housing apartments. These "Fun Fund" extras bring smiles to the faces of the children and mothers, laughter to their voices and promotes an environment of light-hearted, childhood fun!

Friends’ activities this past year include:

• Providing a visit to the Vista Wave Water Park for the mothers and their children.
• Funding $4,000 to install artificial grass in the children’s playground so that they did not have to play on dirt.
• Providing $1,000 for Christmas gift-cards for the teenagers.
• Two “Have a Heart for a Child” fund-raising luncheons have been held at the El Camino Country Club, each attracting over 100 attendees. At our recent luncheon one of the speakers was a (now adult) child of a mother who was a battered client of WRC. She gave personal examples of how she was affected by violence both directly and indirectly. There were not many dry eyes in the audience.
• Our first “Fall in Love with WRC” happy-hour event was held at the El Camino Country Club in October of 2007 with over 100 attendees.

We are planning the following activities for 2008:

• Provide the children with additional upgraded playground equipment.
• Donate funding for the children’s counseling services.
• Hold the second “Fall in Love with WRC” event in October.

Friends of WRC volunteer involvement can assist with agency operational needs and fund raising events. Donating your time, talents and professional expertise can assist with agency special projects needs. Have the satisfaction of helping a child silent victim of domestic violence.
