Victims who have been terrorized by domestic violence and forced to flee their own homes seeking temporary emergency refuge need to feel safe and secure. Families need a supportive environment that maximizes family restructuring, reduces isolation and fosters future independence. Such a sanctuary can play an integral role in helping victims and their children rebuild violence-free lives and establish themselves as independent members of the community.

Alternatives to Abuse Emergency Shelter: An essential element of Women's Resource Center 's domestic violence intervention program is the agency's shelter for battered women and their children, Alternatives to Abuse. This facility is an emergency shelter focusing on moving the client forward into a more permanent, non-violent living situation. This 30-day facility offers a safe, calm, non-isolating environment available to single adult women and adult women with children.

Women's Resource Center 's Alternatives shelter is a treatment-oriented facility. Women in residence are required to participate in available programs designed to prevent future violence as well as develop or enhance everyday "life skills". These include case management; group and peer counseling sessions; training on topics such as nutrition, budgeting, job search techniques, compiling a resume, proper interview skills and credit management; and, information and referral.

Activities for children include: individual and group counseling, advocacy, tutoring, crisis intervention as well as FUN. Children of the appropriate age are required to attend school and are enrolled as regular students in the area's neighborhood schools.

Transitional Housing: Women's Resource Center 's Transition House serves as a bridge between temporary shelter refuge and independent living for victims of domestic violence. Women's Resource Center 's Transition House currently provides the great majority of all transitional housing for battered women in north coastal San Diego County.

Victims of domestic violence may have low self-esteem and many do not see themselves as capable of building violence-free, self-sufficient futures for themselves and their children. Transition House offers the supportive environment where a victim can re-build her/his life, learn of her/his own self-worth and develop the skills needed to be an independent contributing member of the community. Transition House features 20 apartment units which range in size from efficiency (5 units), one-bedroom (9 units) and two-bedroom (6 units).

The twelve to eighteen-month Transition House program is designed to help victims and their children develop violence-free, self-sufficient futures. To assist victims in moving toward economic independence, residents at Trans House must continue to be either enrolled in an education program or work at least thirty hours per week. Once employed, residents are encouraged to start a savings plan.
